What is natamycin (Pimaricin)?

Natamycin (Pimaricin) is an antifungal which can be used as antibiotic to treat some types of fungus infections of the eye.  Natamycin is also an antimyotic food additive used to protect food from mold and yeast growth.

Natamycin Chemical Formula: C33H47NO13

Natanycin Data Sheet

When was Natamycin found?

Natamycin (Pimaricin) is an antifungal which was first isolated in 1955 from Streptomyces Natalensis (a micro organism found in a soil sample from State of Natal, South Africa).

How does Natamycin work?

Natamycin binds to and alters the fungal cell membrane so that vital structures inside the cell pass though the membrane and out of the cell. Without these structures, the fungal cells cannot survive.

Natamycin as antifungal medication:

The ophthalmic form of natamycin is used to treat fungal infections of the eyes. Natamycin is available in Ophthalmic suspension.
