What is
Ibandronate sodium? |
|
Ibandronate sodium is a
bisphosphonate medication. It is not a hormone. Ibandronate
sodium works only on the bone and does not affect the heart,
breast, uterus or other parts of the body. |
|
|
|
How does Ibandronate sodium work?
|
|
Healthy bones are
continuously remodeled (broken down and then reformed); the
minerals and other components of bones are reabsorbed by one
set of cells (osteoclasts) and replaced by another set of
cells to form new bone. Ibandronate suppresses the activity
of osteoclasts; consequently, the breakdown of bone tissue
occurs more slowly than the laying down of new bone. As a
result, bone density and strength are preserved. |
|
|
Ibandronate sodium's function |
|
Clinical
studies indicate that Ibandronate sodium increases bone
mineral density of the existing skeleton and reduces the
risk of spine fractures for postmenopausal women with
osteoporosis. In postmenopausal women with very severe
osteoporosis, Ibandronate sodium reduces the risk of
fractures throughout the skeleton. Like all medications, it
is important to discuss all of the potential benefits and
risks of taking this medication with your medical
professional. |
