What is Eplerenone?

Eplerenone is used alone or in combination with other medications to treat high blood pressure. Eplerenone is in a class of medications called mineralocorticoid receptor antagonists. It works by blocking the action of aldosterone, a natural substance in the body that raises blood pressure.

 

What is Eplerenone used for?

Eplerenone blocks the actions of the hormone aldosterone in the body. Aldosterone is important for the regulation of blood pressure

 

Eplerenone is used to lower high blood pressure. Eplerenone is also used in the treatment of congestive heart failure following a heart attack.

 

Eplerenone Drug Interaction

Do not take eplerenone without first talking to your doctor if you are taking any of the following drugs:

bullet

a potassium supplement such as K-Dur, Klor-Con, and others;

bullet

a salt substitute that contains potassium;

bullet

a potassium-sparing diuretic (water pill) such as triamterene, spironolactone, or amiloride;

bullet

an angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor such as benazepril, captopril, enalapril, fosinopril, lisinopril, moexipril, perindopril, quinapril, ramipril, or trandolapril;

bullet

an angiotensin II receptor inhibitor such as candesartan, eprosartan, irbesartan, losartan, olmesartan, telmisartan, or valsartan;

bullet

fluconazole, ketoconazole, or itraconazole;

bullet

verapamil;

bullet

erythromycin;

bullet

lithium;

bullet

nefazodone

bullet

a protease inhibitor such as amprenavir, ritonavir, nelfinavir, saquinavir, or indinavi; or

bullet

delavirdine.

You may not be able to take eplerenone, or you may require a dosage adjustment or special monitoring during treatment if you are taking any of the medicines listed above.

Drugs other than those listed here may also interact with eplerenone or affect your condition. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking any prescription or over-the-counter medicines, including vitamins, minerals, and herbal products.

 

Precautions Before Using Eplerenone

Before taking eplerenone,

bullet

tell your doctor and pharmacist if you are allergic to eplerenone or any other medications.

bullet

do not take eplerenone if you are taking amiloride, amiloride and hydrochlorothiazide, itraconazole, ketoconazole, potassium supplements, spironolactone, spironolactone and hydrochlorothiazide, triamterene, or triamterene and hydrochlorothiazide.

bullet

tell your doctor and pharmacist what other prescription and nonprescription medications, vitamins, and nutritional supplements you are taking. Be sure to mention any of the following: angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors such as benazepril, captopril, enalapril, fosinopril, lisinopril, and quinapril; angiotensin II receptor antagonists such as eprosartan, irbesartan, losartan, olmesartan, and valsartan; aspirin and other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications such as ibuprofen and naproxen; cimetidine; clarithromycin; danazol; delavirdine; diltiazem; erythromycin; fluconazole; fluoxetine; fluvoxamine; HIV protease inhibitors such as indinavir, ritonavir, and saquinavir; isoniazid; lithium, metronidazole; nefazodone; troleandomycin; verapamil; and zafirlukast. Your doctor may need to change the doses of your medications or monitor you carefully for side effects.

tell your doctor what herbal products you are taking, especially St. John' wort.

bullet

tell your doctor if you have or have ever had high blood levels of potassium, diabetes, gout, or liver or kidney disease.

bullet

tell your doctor if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding. If you become pregnant while taking eplerenone, call your doctor.

 

Eplerenone side effects

Eplerenone may cause side effects. Tell your doctor if any of these symptoms are severe or do not go away:

headache

bullet

dizziness

bullet

diarrhea

bullet

stomach pain

bullet

cough

bullet

excessive tiredness

bullet

flu-like symptoms

bullet

breast enlargement or tenderness

bullet

abnormal vaginal bleeding

Some side effects can be serious. The following symptoms are uncommon, but if you experience any of them, call your doctor immediately:

chest pain

bullet

tingling in arms and legs

bullet

loss of muscle tone

bullet

weakness or heaviness in legs

bullet

confusion

bullet

lack of energy

bullet

cold, gray skin

bullet

irregular heartbeat

Eplerenone may cause other side effects. Call your doctor if you have any unusual problems while taking this medication.

 

What should you do if you miss a dose of Eplerenone?

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember it. However, if it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and continue your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.

 

Overdose Eplerenone

Seek emergency medical attention if an overdose is suspected.

Symptoms of an eplerenone overdose may include vomiting, tremors, drowsiness and seizures.

 

Eplerenone Storage

Keep this medication in the container it came in, tightly closed, and out of reach of children. Store it at room temperature and away from excess heat and moisture (not in the bathroom). Throw away any medication that is outdated or no longer needed. Talk to your pharmacist about the proper disposal of your medication.
